On infinite dimensional Lie algebras having a Cartan decomposition
We introduce the concept of Cartan decomposition relative to a
Cartan subalgebra H, in the sense of Y. Billig and A. Pianzola, for Lie
algebras of arbitrary dimension. The class of simple Lie algebras having
such decomposition is a wide class of Lie algebras closely related to
the topologically simple L*-algebras, the simple c-involutive Lie
algebras and the topologically simple compact Banach-Lie algebras. We
give a description theorem for the complex ones, turning out to be the
natural extension of the finite dimensional setup.
